Dopo il successo ottenuto a Mosca lo scorso autunno, UniCredit e Bank Pekao S.A. presentano a Toruń, in Polonia, la seconda edizione della mostra itinerante “People and the City”. La mostra é realizzata in collaborazione con il CoCA, Centro d’Arte Contemporanea Znaki Czasu di Toruń, che la ospiterà nei suoi spazi espositivi aprendola al pubblico da sabato 3 marzo a domenica 29 aprile 2012.

L’esposizione è realizzata con il patrocinio dell’Ambasciata d’Italia a Varsavia.

La conferenza stampa è prevista per venerdì 2 marzo alle ore 12.00, alla straordinaria presenza dell’artista Francesco Jodice, che in mostra presenta i suoi tre film del ciclo di City Tellers (San Paolo, Dubai e Aral).

UniCredit è lieto di accettare l’invito del CoCA a partecipare al suo ricco programma culturale del 2012. Toruń non è però la prima città ad ospitare mostre della collezione UniCredit, infatti nel corso del 2009 e del 2010 il Gruppo ha portato in tournée la mostra PastPresentFuture a Vienna, Verona e Istanbul e, nella primavera del 2011, una selezione di 80 opere è stata presentata al museo Marta di Herford nella mostra Things are Queer.

“People and the City” è un viaggio artistico attraverso 70 opere dalla UniCredit Art Collection. La mostra è un percorso che mette in luce il rapporto tra le persone e la città a partire dal XX secolo, un’analisi dello spazio urbano come esempio del vivere moderno. Il viaggio parte dalla visione aerea, dove la città è colta nel suo complesso, scendendo nella strada, dove gli edifici e i flussi umani multiculturali diventano i protagonisti, fino ad esplorare la vita intima nella casa e a sognare immaginarie città dove vivere a misura d’uomo.

In mostra sono esposti in mostra dipinti, fotografie e installazioni che riflettono la personale visione della città di alcuni dei più importanti artisti dal ventesimo secolo a oggi come Andreas Gursky, Wolfgang Tillmans, Christian Marclay, Eugène Atget, Barbara Klemm, Jordi Colomer e Peter Blake. Dalle architetture in prospettive non realistiche di Giorgio De Chirico in Piazza d’Italia del 1970, alla fotografia dell’archeologia industriale di periferia immortalata da Gabriele Basilico in Milano del 1981; dai paesaggi architettonici surreali di Giorgio Morandi in Paesaggio del 1925, alla Land Art di Christo che modifica l’architettura delle città imballando palazzi e monumenti come in Lower Manhattan Wrapped Building, uno dei 5 soggetti del portfolio del 1985; dal film dell’artista Christian Marclay, Leone d’oro alla 54° Biennale di Venezia, dal titolo Telephones, agli scatti di vita di strada Hamburg del 1952 a firma di Henri Cartier–Bresson, il padre del fotogiornalismo.

Il progetto è ideato e curato a quattro mani da Dobrila Denegri, Direttore Artistico del CoCA e da Walter Guadagnini, Presidente della Commissione Scientifica UniCredit for Art composta da Luca Massimo Barbero, Lorand Hegyi e Angelika Nollert.

Le opere in mostra fanno parte della collezione corporate di UniCredit e provengono da Turchia, Italia, Germania, Austria e Stati Uniti: un’indagine artistica internazionale sulla città come palcoscenico della vita contemporanea.

La collezione d’arte di UniCredit, composta da più di 60.000 opere tra pittura e scultura, installazioni, video e fotografie, che riflettono l’identità del Gruppo, è il simbolo dell’impegno internazionale della Banca per l’arte.

February 2012 – UniCredit and Bank Pekao S.A., in partnership with the Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu (CoCA) in Toruń, Poland and under the patronage of the Italian Embassy in Warsaw, present the second edition of the People and the City exhibition, following its success in Moscow last year. The show will run from Saturday, March 3 to Sunday, April 29, 2012 in the CoCA exhibition space.

A press conference will be held on Friday, March 2 at 12:00 p.m. to launch the exhibition, where eminent Italian artist Francesco Jodice will discuss City Tellers, his documentary film series about urban realities in São Paulo, Dubai and Aral.

UniCredit is pleased to accept CoCA’s invitation to participate in its rich 2012 cultural program. However, Toruń is not the first city to host an exhibition of artwork from the UniCredit Art Collection. The PastPresentFuture exhibition was held in Vienna, Verona and Istanbul in 2009-2010, after which 80 works from the UniCredit Art Collection were on display in the Things are Queer exhibition held at the Marta Herford Gallery in spring 2011.

People and the City is an artistic journey through an unparalleled selection of 70 works from the UniCredit Art Collection. The exhibition explores the symbiotic relationship between urban environments and inhabitants since the 20th century, and analyzes urban space as a reflection of modern living. The journey begins from an aerial view of the city before arriving at street level, where buildings and multicultural individuals become the subjects of curiosity. The exhibition then increases its focus to explore the intimacy of individuals’ domestic lives and to dream of imaginary cities in which to live on a more human dimension.

The exhibition features paintings, photographs and installations that reflect the personal views of urban environments by some of the most prominent artists of the 20th and 21st century, including Andreas Gursky, Wolfgang Tillmans, Eugène Atget, Barbara Klemm, Jordi Colomer and Peter Blake. Giorgio de Chirico’s Piazza d’Italia (1970) provides a non-realist perspective of urban architecture, while Gabriele Basilico’s Milano (1981) uses photography to capture the industrial archaeology of cities’ outlying areas. The surreal architectural landscapes in Giorgio Morandi’s Paesaggio (1925) lends an interesting contrast to Christo’s land art, Lower Manhattan Wrapped Building, which is one of the five subjects in his 1985 portfolio that modifies cities’ architecture by warping buildings and monuments. Christian Marclay’s film, Telephones (1995), explores the telephone’s function in our society, while Hamburg (1952) by Henri Cartier-Bresson, the father of photojournalism, captures images of street life.

The exhibition was designed and curated by Dobrila Denegri, Artistic Director of the Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu in Toruń, together with Walter Guadagnini, Chairman of the UniCredit for Art Scientific Commission, which also includes Luca Massimo Barbero, Lorand Hegyi and Angelika Nollert.

The artwork presented in the People and the City exhibition are all part of the UniCredit Art Collection, and originate from Austria, Germany, Italy, Turkey and the United States. With over 60,000 works, the UniCredit Art Collection is comprised of paintings, sculptures, installations, videos and photographs, all of which reflect the Group’s European identity and symbolize its international commitment to art.
